Pre-Conference ‘Course of Empire’ Tour with Paul Zahl! (Invitation and Details)

Update [4/24/17]: The tour is currently at capacity.

From the guide himself:

1858_3_detail2_0I invite any and all who are coming to the 10th Anniversary Mockingbird Conference in New York to a Special Pre-Conference Visit to the famous Thomas Cole cycle of paintings entitled “The Course of Empire”.

Thomas Cole, probably the most celebrated American painter of the early 19th Century, painted five scenes of the rise and fall of empire — prognosticating the possible corruption and end of the American Dream — between 1833 and 1836. They are stunning, visionary scenes!

The tour is especially special because “The Course of Empire” cycle is often on tour, and unavailable for viewing in New York. This year, 2017, the paintings are home!

Those who have rsvp’d: we’ll meet at the New York Historical Society (170 Central Park West at 77th Street) at 11:25am sharp. Taxi-cab is probably the easiest way to get there, especially from the conference venue on the lower east side. But it’s also a short walk from the 81st St stop on the B or C subway trains, or the 79th St stop on the 1 train.

When you arrive, simply tell the guard and/or floor manager that you’re there with an education group (“Mockingbird”), and they’ll waive you through. I will be waiting for you there from 11:15am onward.

The tour should last one hour and costs $10.

After the tour, there are many interesting and outstanding restaurants in the neighborhood for a good and reasonable lunch.

Be there!  HUGS, PZ
